Star items in our next sale | August 2013 Auction

We are very proud to include an outstanding collection of rare historic English gold and silver coins in their Two Day Specialist Auction Sale on 20th & 21st August.

One of the star lots is an Oliver Cromwell gold Broad of twenty shillings, dated 1656, lot 328. This was the first gold coin produced by the new machine made process with a milled edge. Previously coins were often reduced in size and value by clipping the edges for the precious metal. Only a very small number of the Cromwell gold coins were produced. A F Brock expect this coin to achieve between £6,000 and £10,000. Click HERE to read our full post about this.

The August sale also features medieval gold coins, including an Edward III half noble , Henry VIII Crown of the Double Rose and a half Sovereign, James I Laurel and Unite. The collection also comprises a superb example of a Charles I Unite. There is a silver Testoon produced towards the end of Henry VIII’s reign in very debased silver, this earned Henry VIII the nickname of “Old Coppernose”.

Edward III Half Noble, c.1360

The sale also features gold Guineas from Charles II to George III and most dates of gold Sovereigns issued after the great re-coinage of 1816 to the present day. Earlier silver Crowns in the sale include Elizabeth I and three examples of the ornate Gothic portrait Proof Crowns of Queen Victoria, including one struck in pure silver of which only a few are known to exist. Other star items include proof £5 and £2 gold coins of 1826 and an immaculate proof gold £5 of 1887.

Oliver Cromwell Broad Coin | August 2013 Auction

Living in a Monarchy, particularly during the long reign of our present Monarch, Elizabeth II, we sometimes forget that England was once a Republic after the beheading of King Charles I in 1649. Oliver Cromwell, the Lord Protector, declared the country to be called "the Commonwealth of England” and was regarded as “the Great Emancipator”.

Work on coins bearing his portrait were authorised and in 1656 the first gold coin was produced.

This coin was manufactured by the new machine method, invented by Pierre Blondeau, a Frenchman. This new method was introduced to stop the removal of precious metal, called “clipping”, from the previous coins which were hammered. This first gold coin was named “The Broad”, it was the precursor of the sovereign and had a value of twenty shillings.

A F Brock & Co. Ltd are proud to be offering for sale a very fine example of this rare coin in their 21st August auction sale. It is one of the best coins in a private collection from the south Cheshire area that A F Brock have been instructed to sell. They expect this coin to achieve between £6,000 and £10,000. The entire collection contains a number of rare historic gold and silver coins that will be offered in A F Brock’s summer auction sale so it is a wonderful opportunity for coin collectors who want quality items.

Stunning Vintage Pear Diamond Ring

A star lot in our next sale is this beautiful vintage ladies' diamond and platinum ring with a pear cut stone and three small set diamonds to each shoulder, dating back to around the 1950s.

This lot (lot 163) is a fantastic example of how you can save so much money when buying from auction in comparison to buying from the high street.
We estimate this stunning ring at £3500 to £4500; however if you were to purchase the equivalent from a retailer you would be expecting to pay a whopping £16,000 - £20,000!

For the essential details of the ring, the size of the pear cut stone is approx. 10mm x 6.5mm, approx. 2 carats. The stones are set in platinum, size U or 10 US, weighing 4.4g.

I LOVE this ring and I think that the lucky person that goes home with this will be very happy with it!

Our next auction is on August 20th. You can click HERE to go to the online catalogue at The Saleroom.
