Ancient Greek Coins in November Auction

Today we show a few examples of the Ancient Greek Coins that will be in our
forthcoming auction sale on the 20th November 2013.

The above coin is a 'Kyzikos, Mysia, Electrum Stater' from c. 460-400 BC showing
a boy or man seated and facing right holding a tunny fish in his out-stretched hand.
Our numismatist (coin expert) claims this is a very rare coin.

Electrum is a naturally occurring alloy of gold and silver, with trace amounts of copper and other metals. It has also been produced artificially, and is often known as green gold. The ancient Greeks called it 'gold' or 'white gold', as opposed to 'refined gold'.  Electrum was used for the earliest metal coins, and as early as the third millennium BC in Old Kingdom Egypt. Electrum was much better for coinage than gold, mostly because it was harder and more durable, but also because techniques for refining gold were not widespread at the time (source: Wikipedia)

This coin is described by our numismatist as an 'Attica, Athens silver Tetradrachm'
showing head of Athena wearing a crested helmet on obverse and
an Owl with olive sprig and crescent moon in background on reverse.

These "Old Style" silver tetradrachms were minted in Athens, Ancient Greece, between 449 and 404 BC.  Apparently these coins funded the building of the Acropolis and Parthenon in Athens, as well as funding the Peloponnesian War (431 - 404 BC) between Athens and Sparta.

Athenian silver tetradrachms are one of the most beautiful and collectible coins ever made.

This third coin is from the Seleucid Kingdom, silver Tetradrachm, Seleukos I, Nikator  c. 312-280 BC.
It shows Zeus seated on the reverse holding Nike, the winged Goddess of Victory.

These Ancient Greek coins will be in our 20th November Auction Sale.
